Mosel-Saar-Ruwer: #1 on Friday November 27, 2026 with Jonas Dostert (Weinbau Jonas Dostert, Upper Moselle) & Kaja Khov (Racines Rebelles, Luxembourg)

We’ve spent quite a bit of time introducing the Mosel wine region through Riesling and slate. So naturally, for the very first evening of the series, we’re not looking at slate or Riesling. Instead, we’ll be kicking things off with what is probably the nerdiest corner of the entire region – and the perfect evening for anyone who has never quite understood what all the Riesling fuss is about.

Together with Jonas Dostert and Kaja Khov of Racines Rebelles, we’ll be taking you to the Upper Mosel. It may be part of the Mosel wine region, but it bears remarkably little resemblance to what most people imagine when they think of the region. You’d be hard pressed to find the Mosel’s typical slate, for example. Instead, the vineyards sit on limestone soils more commonly associated with Burgundy, the Jura, or Champagne. And rather than Riesling, the star of the show is the rather more underrated Elbling.
Little remains of Elbling’s former glory, despite its having dominated vineyards across Europe in the Middle Ages. In Germany, it was gradually displaced by Riesling and Silvaner. Now, around 90% of Germany’s remaining Elbling vines are found in the Upper Mosel – something of a Gaulish village holding out against the rest of the country’s wine landscape.

For many years, Billy wanted very little to do with Elbling. Too often it had been treated as a high-yield workhorse, grown for quantity rather than quality. That only changed when Jonas Dostert entered his life. Jonas does almost exactly the opposite: drastically reducing yields, pursuing uncompromising quality, and revealing a completely different side to the grape.

Through Jonas, we eventually met Kaja Khov. Working on the Luxembourg side of the river – the Moselle rather than the Mosel – she follows a remarkably similar philosophy. Her wines, too, demonstrate just how much potential this often-overlooked variety possesses. Stylistically, the two estates are surprisingly close, despite an international border running between their vineyards.
Which is why we’ve invited them both to the table. Two winemakers, two countries, one seriously underrated grape variety, and a suitably idiosyncratic introduction to our Mosel wine series.
