Wine Evening at Nobelhart – Rajat Parr of Phelan Farm

On the 9th of July, we’re welcoming Rajat Parr and Eva Fricke (of Weingut Eva Fricke and Delicious Green Selection) to the big table at Nobelhart & Schmutzig – and pouring a lineup of Raj’s wines from his Phelan Farm in California.
If you’re deep into wine, you’ve probably heard of Raj. First as one of the most influential sommeliers in the U.S. – running the wine programs for over 20 restaurants – and now as a winemaker doing things his own way, far from the usual Central Coast formulas.

Phelan Farm sits just a few miles from the Pacific, on the San Luis Obispo Coast. Founded in 1851, it’s a site rich with history. Nonetheless, what Raj is doing isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about turning the vineyard into a functioning ecosystem. That means no copper or sulfur. Just seaweed, whey from a neighbor’s cows, and ferments made from local plants. He sprays with lupine and honey preparations, uses compost made on-site, and pays obsessive attention to what the vines are telling him in real time. Raj farms own-rooted Pinot and Chardonnay, works biodynamically, and keeps the intervention in the cellar to a minimum. No inoculation, no over-ripening, no nonsense. Some have even called it California’s most radical vineyard.

Having said all that, Raj’s work eschews natural wine clichés. If anything, his wines are more similar to some of the European classics – which is not to say boring. Expect wines that are sharp, bright, alive. Our very own Steve Hartzsch had the opportunity to try some a while back: “It’s the best damn Pinot I’ve ever had from the Americas. It’s almost French. What surprised me above all was how such young vines could bring out such a complex sense of terroir.”

We’re really looking forward to having Raj over. He’s truly a legend in the field and a dear friend to many of our trusted wine friends such as Veronica Rogov and Michael Sager.
In cooperation with Eva Fricke and Delicious Green Selection.
